Signs Your Hot Tub Needs Service or Repair
If you’re a hot tub owner, you already know how much relaxation and enjoyment your spa brings to your life. So, nothing is worse when a problem arises, disrupting your ability to use it. Let’s examine the four main signs that your spa is in need of a professional repair.
1. Temperature Problems
It’s pretty hard to enjoy your spa if your water isn’t heating properly — or not heating at all. Whether your water is cold or the temperature is inconsistent from day-to-day, this is not an easy fix.
The culprit, most likely, will be the spa’s control panel, filter, or circulation system, making it a job for a certified hot tub technician.
2. Odourous Water
It’s completely normal for the water in your hot tub to emit a faintly chemical smell from the cleaners you use to sanitize it. It’s not normal, however, for your water to actually stink. If it does, that’s a pretty good indication that your spa either has a clogged filter, drain or pump or that the water isn’t being circulated properly. Less likely, although still a possibility, is that the water is contaminated.
No matter what the cause, this is not a problem you should try to fix on your own. Only a hot tub technician will be able to accurately assess and fix the problem.
3. Discoloured Water
If the clear water in your spa has turned a murky green, or worse, black, that’s a sure sign that something has gone wrong.
While green water is caused by algae build up, dark water is a pretty good indicator of contamination. If balancing, sanitizing and shocking the water doesn’t do the trick, it could mean there’s corrosion inside the pipes or another serious issue. And that is always a job for a professional.
If this is the case, it’s important you don’t use your spa until the technician gives you the go-ahead.
4. Jet Malfunction
If your jets aren’t working properly, there are a few simple steps you can take that may fix the problem. First, make sure there is enough water in your spa. Splashing and getting in and out of the hot tub can lower levels and, without enough water, it’s impossible for the jets to do their job well. It’s also a good idea to check to make sure the drain is covered and no water is escaping that way.
If neither of these is the culprit, it could mean the jets are clogged due to a calcium build up. Start by testing your water to see if it’s hard. If it is, using a descaler might do the trick.
If that doesn’t work, it could mean the clog is deep within the lines or that there’s a problem with your spa’s pump, valves or control panel. At this point, it’s time to call your dealer to schedule a professional repair.
